The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), a prominent umbrella body representing youth groups across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, has expressed disappointment over remarks attributed to Joe Igbokwe, who questioned Seyi Tinubu’s suitability for the governorship of Lagos State based on his age.
In a statement signed by its President-General, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, CONYL described Igbokwe’s comments as baseless and outdated, emphasizing that age has never been the sole determinant of capacity or performance in leadership.
CONYL highlighted Seyi Tinubu’s achievements as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, asserting that his track record speaks volumes about his capacity to deliver in public office.
“Seyi Tinubu is not a boy but a man, fully prepared and capable of delivering. His governorship ambition is not a distraction to President Bola Tinubu but rather a testament to his dedication to public service,” the statement read.
The coalition also addressed Igbokwe’s skepticism, pointing out numerous examples of young leaders who have excelled globally and in Nigeria.
Drawing parallels with historical precedents, CONYL referenced leaders like: Thomas W. Bartley, who became Governor of Ohio at 32 and delivered remarkable results. Harold Stassen, elected Governor of Minnesota at a young age and known for his exceptional governance. General Yakubu Gowon, who became Nigeria’s Head of State at 31 and oversaw significant progress, including the establishment of key refineries and infrastructure still in use today.
“These examples demonstrate that young leaders can bring innovation and progress to governance. The ‘Not Too Young to Run’ bill, signed into law in 2018, underscores this fact, empowering capable young Nigerians to take up leadership roles,” CONYL stated.
The coalition asserted that Seyi Tinubu enjoys widespread support among Lagosians, both residents and business owners, for his forward-thinking and philanthropic contributions.
“The people of Lagos State recognize and appreciate Mr. Seyi Tinubu’s contributions. He has proven himself to be a capable leader, ready to serve, irrespective of his age,” the statement added.
CONYL advised Igbokwe to reconsider his stance and refrain from undermining young leaders with baseless criticism.
“Joe Igbokwe’s views are outdated and irrelevant in today’s Nigeria. The youth have taken their destiny into their own hands, driven by a desire for positive change. Age does not determine performance—capacity, vision, and action do. Seyi Tinubu has demonstrated these qualities beyond doubt,” the statement concluded.
