Court orders Emefiele to remain in DSS custody for 3 more weeks
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered that the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, should spend another three weeks in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Justice Hamza Muazu, who gave the order on Wednesday, after hearing the arguments of parties in the application for Emefiele’s bail filed by his counsel, fixed July 13, 2023 for ruling on the matter.
Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu and subsequently detained by the DSS on June 10.
The suspended apex bank boss had on Tuesday, approached the court challenging his detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).
He prayed for the court to enforce his right to liberty and freedom of movement, stressing that there was no basis for his continuous detention.
However, the counsel to respondents, that is, both DSS and the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, had opposed the bail application.
In opposing the bail application, the respondents’ counsel told the court that Emefiele was a flight risk.
He also argued that the suspended CBN governor was being detained on the order of a Chief Magistrates Court of the FCT
